Encoding, explained
Base64 represents data as text. It is not encryption and doesn't keep sensitive information secret.
How to decode Base64 online
- Paste a Base64 or Base64URL string into the input box.
- Click Decode Base64, or press Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on Mac).
- Click Copy result to copy the decoded UTF-8 text.
For example, SGVsbG8= decodes to Hello. Spaces and line breaks are ignored. Unpadded Base64 and the Base64URL characters - and _ are also supported.
Base64 decoding questions
Why does my Base64 fail to decode?
Check for extra punctuation, a full data URL prefix, or incorrectly placed padding. Paste only the Base64 portion. This decoder supports UTF-8 text; images, PDFs and other binary files cannot be displayed as text.
Can I decode Korean text or emoji?
Yes, when the original text was encoded as UTF-8. A different character encoding can produce an invalid UTF-8 error.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is a reversible representation of bytes as text and does not protect secrets. Use encryption when confidentiality is required.
